Korine: “A few years ago, I asked Boz Boorer (Morrissey’s guitarist) if he’d release the demo of Did You Get…, and when he politely declined, I knew where things stood. If I wasn’t even shy about asking my biggest inspirations—without a hint of embarrassment—if they’d please do something with the demo (because I didn’t have the right musicians at the time), then I knew I had to just go for it myself. I believed in this song so much. I just needed musicians with that real indie feel. The Morrissey feel, you know? For those who get what that means: pure magic. Because there’s no doubt Morrissey was a huge inspiration for me.
For four years after Morrissey’s solo albumYou Are The Quarry came out, I was obsessed—listening on repeat, everywhere I could. To me, it was the most beautiful album ever. Before that, I didn’t really know much about Morrissey, except for Girlfriend in a Coma (by The Smiths in 1987) which my boyfriend played for me at home—kind of a weird song for a first date. But apparently, a seed was planted because it inspired me to keep writing music.
In 2008, while cleaning windows, a title suddenly popped into my head, and my co-writer Alex and I wrote and recorded our first demo. Now I just needed a few musicians—ideally, a band—to bring the song to life. A band came, but the right feel didn’t. Until a drummer and a guitarist showed up who played the demo exactly how I imagined it (yeah, I was picky), I couldn’t do anything with it. It almost worked out in my studio in 2019… and then COVID hit.
In the meantime, the demo started taking on a life of its own online. Twelve years later, turns out the answer was right in front of me—I just had to see it. Jos, a multi-instrumentalist and former auditionee for my band Kae West and my son Kay, who was into drumming before he picked up the guitar, both thought the demo was awesome. And I’m so grateful to these two legends because they turned the 2004 demo into what finally became Did You Get What You Came Here For, released today on all streaming platforms worldwide!
I’m also really grateful that the guys from Kae West are cool with me releasing the song under Kae West.
Sometimes, things aren’t as complicated as they seem. You just need a little patience.
And that boyfriend? Things worked out. We’ve been married for almost 24 years.”
