Welcome to my solo page!

Over the years, I’ve written and co-written numerous of my own songs. While my solo work, under the name of Kae, has always had a quieter, more alternative feel, much of it has blended into the power and energy that Kae West now embodies. In addition to my own work, I’ve also covered songs by artists like Morrissey and Sparks, whose music has greatly influenced me.

In 2022, I founded Kae West, a prog-rock band primarily focused on original material. What started as a collaboration with the drummer soon expanded, and the band now performs a mix of my solo music and new work in the progressive rock tradition.

On this page, I share my personal solo projects, and I hope you will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them.

My latest record, Did You Get What You Came Here For, is released under the name Kae West and features Kae with guest musicians:
Jos van den Bogert all guitars and production and Kay Varekamp on drums

A few years ago, I asked Boz Boorer (Morrissey’s guitarist) if he’d release the demo of Did You Get…, and when he politely declined, I knew where things stood. If I wasn’t even shy about asking my biggest inspirations—without a hint of embarrassment—if they’d please do something with the demo (because I didn’t have the right musicians at the time), then I knew I had to just go for it myself. I believed in this song so much. I just needed musicians with that real indie feel. The Morrissey feel, you know? For those who get what that means: pure magic. Because there’s no doubt Morrissey was a huge inspiration for me.

For four years after Morrissey’s solo albumYou Are The Quarry came out, I was obsessed—listening on repeat, everywhere I could. To me, it was the most beautiful album ever. Before that, I didn’t really know much about Morrissey, except for Girlfriend in a Coma (by The Smiths in 1987) which my boyfriend played for me at home—kind of a weird song for a first date. But apparently, a seed was planted because it inspired me to keep writing music.

In 2008, while cleaning windows, a title suddenly popped into my head, and my co-writer Alex and I wrote and recorded our first demo. Now I just needed a few musicians—ideally, a band—to bring the song to life. A band came, but the right feel didn’t. Until a drummer and a guitarist showed up who played the demo exactly how I imagined it (yeah, I was picky), I couldn’t do anything with it. It almost worked out in my studio in 2019… and then COVID hit.

In the meantime, the demo started taking on a life of its own online. Twelve years later, turns out the answer was right in front of me—I just had to see it. Jos, a multi-instrumentalist and former auditionee for my band Kae West and my son Kay, who was into drumming before he picked up the guitar, both thought the demo was awesome. And I’m so grateful to these two legends because they turned the 2004 demo into what finally became Did You Get What You Came Here For, released today on all streaming platforms worldwide!

I’m also really grateful that the guys from Kae West are cool with me releasing the song under Kae West.

Sometimes, things aren’t as complicated as they seem. You just need a little patience.
And that boyfriend? Things worked out. We’ve been married for almost 25 years.

DE CONFRONTATIE (Lyrics/Tekst)

ALS EEN KIND DAT HUILT
BANG EN ALLEEN
TOCH KOMT, HET MES , STEEDS DICHTERBIJ.
DIT PRACHTIGE KIND HET MOET LIJDEN
DIT PRACHTIGE DIER MOET DOOD
EEN ‘DOOD ZONDER REDE’
EN ‘DOOD ZONDER REDE’ IS DOODSLAG.

WANT HET VLEES DAT JE BLOOTSTELT AAN VUUR
IS NIET SAPPIG, ONMISBAAR OF PUUR
MAAR DOOD ZONDER REDE
EN DOOD ZONDER REDE IS DOODSLAG.

EN HET KALF DAT JE KLIEFT OP JE BORD
OOK DOODSLAG
EN DE VOGELS NODELOOS
OOK DOODSLAG.

ALS JE ZIET HOE DIEREN DOODGAAN.

DE WAARHEID IS CONFRONTEREND
NIET GERUSTSTELLEND, PIJNLOOS OF REIN.
HET IS GUTSEND BLOED MET DE GODLOZE STANK VAN DOODSLAG.
NIET NATUURLIJK, NORMAAL OF GEZOND
IN HET SLACHTHUIS  WORDT MASSAMOORD GESMOORD
VOOR HET VLEES IN JE MOND
MET DE ZIELLOZE SMAAK VAN DOODSLAG.

NODELOOS. HET IS DOODSLAG.
NODELOOS.

DOODSLAG.

De Confrontatie, a release in native Dutch and Meat Is Murder are both covers of the original by The Smiths, which first appeared on the eponymous album in 1985, produced by The Smiths.

MUSIC AGAINST ANIMAL ABUSE

“As long as the horrors in all slaughterhouses and the maltreatment and suffering of animals for the slice of meat, fish and poultry on the plate, or for what ever other reasons exist, “Meat Is Murder”, the revealing truth-based song written by Morrissey and Marr and released by The Smiths in 1984, must be passed on. Besides “Meat Is Murder” there aren’t any songs about needless slaughter and abuse of animals to be found and that is a missed opportunity and a shame. For musicians, artists, bands, composers, songwriters are in strong position to give their musical voices and arts to the animals and through releasing music and art against animal abuse about all atrocities inside as well as outside the slaughterhouses, we are able to make that change for the animals, whom we should consider all as our friends.”

Facebookgroup “Music Against Animal Abuse“ is welcoming everyone, inviting all musicians, bands, composers, songwriters and DJ’s to share their music, music videos and art for all to listen to, to see and to share to help making that difference.

Please feel free to upload songs and art you discover, with respect for the artist, which you think need to be seen and heard.

All art shared must have a clear musical voice for the animals and/or a clear musical voice against all kinds of animal suffering affected by inhuman actions.

The story behind “Music Against Animal Abuse” is the recent release of two songs, “De Confrontatie” and “Meat Is Murder”, both adaptations of the original “Meat Is Murder” by Morrissey and Marr in the wake of this anthem.

If there is more music written against animal suffering out there, where is it? How come it is never played?

So let’s release more songs that could help make a difference or at least find the songs that might exist but seldom played. Let’s get these songs out there and let them be heard!

To every one, please join in! Go to “Music Against Animal Abuse” and share your sympathy, your thoughts, your feelings in favor of the animals by uploading (your) music, new, covers or existing, art, lyrics, poems, etc in this group. Sharing is deeply appreciated and your contribution will also be shared as a thank you on my personal profile.

For all animals, for all humans…for the world. Because we must.

Music and art shared in this group must have a clear voice for the animals and/or a clear voice against all kinds of animal suffering affected by inhuman actions. Content that glorifies violence or worships the suffering or humiliation of all living kind is not allowed.
